Oak Cottage Kitchen

This wall was empty. Not a tired old kitchen to rip out, just a long stretch of nothing in a low-ceilinged cottage with heavy exposed beams, leaded windows and a quarry tiled floor. The whole run is new storage where there wasn't any.

I built five base units along it with a solid oak worktop over the top, including dedicated space for the bins so they're not left standing out in the room. Above the worktop is a sprayed open spice rack with adjustable shelves, set out to clear the beam that crosses the room.

Nothing in a building this age is square or a standard size, so every cabinet was made to fit its own gap and scribed to the walls.

Inside, the carcasses are a mix of materials rather than oak throughout. The client wanted to be careful with the budget, so we put the oak where it shows and where it earns its keep. It keeps the cost sensible without the insides looking like an afterthought.
